Man United 0 Liverpool 3: Steven Gerrard says that the Reds have underlined their status as title contenders with emphatic win
Steven Gerrard declared that Liverpool have now underlined their status as genuine title contenders in emphatic fashion after his two penalties helped them sink 10-man Manchester United.
The Reds skipper netted a spot-kick either side of half-time after a handball from Rafael and a foul on Joe Allen by Phil Jones.
We’ve shown today that we’re genuine contenders and we’re going to fight until the end
Liverpool were awarded a third penalty when Nemanja Vidic was sent off for a foul on Daniel Sturridge but Gerrard missed, before Luis Suarez’s neat finish added gloss to the scoreline.
The win left Liverpool four points behind league leaders Chelsea, with the Reds having played a game less than Jose Mourinho’s men.
And Gerrard told Sky Sports: “I think we’ve shown today that we’re genuine contenders and we’re going to fight until the end.
“We believe that was can win the league. But the easiest thing in football is to talk the talk. We have to treat Cardiff and Sunderland the same as Manchester United.
“I’ve come here many times and been played off the park. This is one of the most difficult places to come in the Premier League.
“We came here and dominated from start to finish – we’re disappointed that we didn’t get more goals.
“It’s a fantastic day personally, getting a couple of goals. But we came here to win the game. We’ll enjoy tonight but we need to move on very quickly.”
The England international continued: “You’ve got to give credit to the manager. We played a diamond today and totally bossed the middle of the park.
“We’ve got two of the best strikers in the world to go and do the damage. If you ask the Manchester United defenders today, I don’t think they’ve ever had a harder 90 minutes than that.”
