Wayne Rooney admitted Manchester United “had to win at all costs” after Robin van Persie’s first-half header handed the Red Devils victory over Arsenal.

The former Gunners captain rose highest to meet a Rooney corner and directed his header inside the far post in the 27th minute at Old Trafford as the visitors struggled to get a foothold in the game.

Arsenal improved after the break but were unable to break down a stubborn United defence as the north London side lost their first league game since their opening-day defeat by Aston Villa.

The win hoisted United up into fifth place in the Premier League table, five points behind leaders Arsenal – and man-of-the-match Rooney reflected on a hard-fought victory.

“It’s a great result,” Rooney said. “Arsenal are a good team and we knew we had to win today at all costs. I think it’s the toughest we’ve been to play against and to break down.

“We defended really well and thankfully Robin got the goal for us and we got the three points but it was a great effort by everyone.

“We knew we couldn’t afford to lose today – we couldn’t let Arsenal get 11 points ahead of us today.

“We knew a victory would put us right back in there and we’re in a great position.”
