Man United 1 Chelsea 1: Player ratings as Robin van Persie rescues a point
Player ratings as Robin van Persie's last-minute equaliser earns a point for Manchester United
Manchester United
David de Gea Dived low to deny Drogba after Rojo’s mistake handed Chelsea the incentive. Even better stop to push Hazard’s second-half effort out for a corner, but only for Drogba to score moments later. 8/10
Rafael da Silva Couldn’t keep a handle on Drogba as the veteran scored a headed opener. A mismatch. 5
Chris Smalling Drafted in to replace injured Phil Jones, Smalling looked relatively comfortable. Rarely put a foot wrong. 6
Marcos Rojo Recklessly conceded possession to leave Willian with Smalling to beat. Luckily, his centre-half partner came to the rescue. Poor header nearly allowed Drogba to break the deadlock. 5
Luke Shaw Decent performance. The left-back offered a threat going forward as he supported Januzaj or, on occasions, Di Maria as United searched for an equaliser. 6
Daley Blind A little untidy in possession, giving away the ball to put his team-mates under pressure. 5
Adnan Januzaj Played a disguised through ball to catch the Chelsea defence square for the first time. Earned a dangerous free-kick on the edge of the area. 6
Marouane Fellaini Helped to disrupt the Chelsea midfield with useful blocks or a professional foul. He sliced an early second-half chance wide of Courtois’s goal. Added little going forward, though. His late header left the Chelsea goalkeeper grounded as Van Persie struck a late, late leveller. 6
Juan Mata Can’t fault the Spaniard for effort. Always moving, looking for a pass. But struggled to leave a mark on his former side. Replaced with 24 minutes remaining. 5
Angel di María Set the tone with a brace of ambitious efforts in the opening 10 minutes. Was the home side’s most-dangerous player. His set-piece delivery was disappointing, though.6
Robin van Persie Drew a save from Courtois after racing on to a through ball. The big Belgian prevented the Dutch striker from scoring his second goal of the season twice more on a frustrating afternoon for the 31-year-old. Finally, he got his reward in the 93rd minute. 8
Substitutes
James Wilson Glanced a looping header hopefully towards Courtois’s goal. 5
Chelsea
Thibaut Courtois Stood tall to block Van Persie’s 22nd-minute strike. Produced two further stops to deny the United striker. Another strong performance but couldn’t do anything to prevent Van Persie netting a late equaliser after initially denying Fellaini. 7
Branislav Ivanovic Was demanding a penalty after Smalling kept a close hold of his shirt in the penalty area. The defender mistimed a challenge on Januzaj, flirting with danger. Should have added a second but flashed his effort across goal. Sent off for a second bookable offence in stoppage-time. 5
Gary Cahill Solid performance. The England international didn’t put a foot wrong. 7
John Terry Raised his arm hopefully when Van Persie broke through and had Courtois to thank for his save. Continue to defies his ageing legs. 7
Filipe Luis Replacing the suspended Cesar Azpilicueta, Luis effortlessly slotted into the side. 7
Cesc Fàbregas The former Arsenal striker made a quiet start to the game. Did provide the corner for Drogba’s goal. 7
Nemanja Matic (man of the match) Unsurprisingly didn’t come out worse of a bone-crunching 50/50 with Di Maria. It laid down a marker for the visitors. His uncompromising challenges were a feature of the game. 8
Willian Collected Rojo’s misplaced pass but couldn’t beat Smalling for pace. Willian was a livewire and tireless runner throughout the 1-0 win. 7
Oscar Was the most disappointing of Chelsea’s attacking midfield trio. Booked for a clumsy second-half tackle before being substituted. 5
Eden Hazard Superb individual moment to play a one-two with Drogba to take five United players out of the game, only to be denied by De Gea. 7
Didier Drogba First notable impact was to illegally catch breaking Mata to earn a yellow card. Reminded Mourinho that he still has something to offer with a powerful header. 8
Subsitute
John Obi Mikel Provided more steel in midfield. 6
