Man United 1 Man City 2: Roberto Mancini says his side's win demonstrates that they do not deserve to be so far behind their rivals
Roberto Mancini believes Manchester City’s victory at Manchester United demonstrated that his side are not as far behind their local rivals as the Premier League table suggests.
After a bright first half from the visitors, City took the lead in the 51st minute when James Milners’ low effort flew past David De Gea from outside the box.
United levelled eight minutes later when Citizens captain Vincent Kompany inadvertently diverted Robin van Persie’s free-kick past his own goalkeeper.
But substitute Sergio Aguero won it for the defending champions in the 78th minute when he netted a superb solo goal to stall United’s charge for a 20th top-flight title.
“We’re happy, we deserved to win,” Mancini told Sky Sports. “It was important for us for the second place.
“I think we showed that we don’t deserve to be 15 points behind, but this is football. We showed that we deserve to stay very close to them.
“Today we played very well and we only conceded because we didn’t pay attention and didn’t mark very well. We kept the ball well and we played better than United.”
The win saw City close the gap on league leaders United back to 12 points with seven games left to play – but Mancini admits his side have no chance of mounting a remarkable revival and retaining their title.
“It’s finished,” said Mancini when asked about the title race. “It’s important that we finish in second position. With this victory we probably won’t have any problems. This was important today.
“They scored more than us this season and this is the difference.”
