Man United 1 Real Madrid 2: We wouldn’t have won 11v11 – Mourinho
Man United 1 Real Madrid 2: Jose Mourinho admits he does not think his side would have beaten the Red Devils if Nani was not sent off
Jose Mourinho admits he does not think Real Madrid would have beaten Manchester United if the Red Devils had not been reduced to 10 men as a result of Nani’s sending off.
Nani was shown a straight red card in the 56th minute less than 10 minutes after a Sergio Ramos own-goal had put United 1-0 on the night at Old Trafford.
The Portugal winger’s foot was high as he went into an aerial challenge with Alvaro Arbeloa but the decision looked somewhat harsh as he appeared to have his eye on the ball at all times.
The game then swung in Madrid’s favour, as substitute Luka Modric netted a stunning long-range drive, before Cristiano Ronaldo slid in at the far post to turn home Gonzalo Higuain’s teasing low cross and seal a 3-2 aggregate win.
“My feeling is that Manchester United were playing very well, were very compact and aggressive in a good way,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.
“They were very tactically well organised and the match was very difficult for us. I had the feeling Luka Modric changed the game as he brought qualities we did not have before.
“I doubt that 11 v 11 we win the match. Today I am frustrated as we played so well against Barcelona and today, I was waiting for more.
“I know Manchester United are giants, not just physically but mentally. I know they have a manager who can motivate then, but I was waiting for us to play in a different way.”
