David Moyes singled out Wayne Rooney for special praise after Manchester United beat Real Sociedad to remain top of their Champions League group.

Inigo Martinez’s second-minute own goal – which came after some superb work by Rooney – ended up being the difference between the two sides despite the Red Devils largely dominating proceedings at Old Trafford.

And Moyes was thrilled with the 27-year-old’s performance as the Red Devils remained in control of Group A.

“He was absolutely terrific tonight, he was great,” Moyes told Sky Sports. “I was shouting at him in the last five minutes for giving it away a couple of times in the corner but overall he played really well.

“We want a top player like Wayne to play well – and he is playing well.

“I’m repeating myself but I kept saying from day one, he was great, training great – I thought he was in really good shape. Now we need to see it all the time.”

Moyes was pleased with his side’s overall display but admitted his frustration at their inability to score the second goal.

“Overall we played really well. We had really good performances throughout the team tonight,” he continued.

“It was a good performance but we could have scored more goals and should have. We had enough opportunities but didn’t finish it off.”
