Tim Sherwood claimed that Manchester United were “there for the taking” after watching Tottenham seal their second successive win at Old Trafford.

David Moyes’ men started brightly but Emmanuel Adebayor gave Spurs the lead in the 34th minute when he headed home Christian Eriksen’s cross.

Denmark international Eriksen then doubled Spurs’ advantage after half-time with a close-range header, before Danny Welbeck pulled one back for the home side moments later.

And Sherwood, who is unbeaten in four Premier League games since taking over from Andre Villas-Boas, was delighted with the “heart” his side showed as they moved above United and into sixth place.

“To be honest I thought we could have moved the ball a bit sharper, especially in the first half because they were there for the taking I thought,” Sherwood told BT Sport.

“Games are won on different qualities and I think we showed the heart of a lion today.

“It’s a very tough place to come. We really dug in and all credit to the lads for getting the result in the end.”

He continued: “We’re making a habit of switching off when we score. We’re running 70 yards to celebrate a goal – which you can understand – but then we need to get our minds switched back on and we didn’t do it well enough.”

Asked about Tottenham’s aspirations for the remainder of the season, the 44-year-old added: “We’ll just try and win as many games as we can. I know it’s boring but that’s basically it.

“We’ll try and dig out results and see what we can do, but I think we’ve got good enough players to achieve something. What that will be remains to be seen.”

Meanwhile, Tottenham captain Michael Dawson insisted that the north Londoners remain in the hunt for a top-four finish.

“I think the work-rate from the boys was magnificent, top class,” said Dawson. “We’ve always believed [that Tottenham can finish in the top four].

“We’ve had some hard days but we’ve all stuck together and with the quality in that dressing room we’ll always be up there.”
