David Moyes admits his Manchester United side had to overcome a “big challenge” after they twice came from behind to beat Stoke City at Old Trafford.

The Potters took a surprise early lead when Jonny Evans’ clearance hit Peter Crouch and flew in.

United levelled through Robin van Persie but Marko Arnautovic’s free-kick restored Stoke’s lead to make it 2-1 to the visitors at half-time.

However, Moyes’ men drew level again thanks to Wayne Rooney’s header, before Javier Hernandez turned home Patrice Evra’s cross to seal the win.

“We found ourselves 2-1 down going in at the break so it was a big challenge to make sure they went out and won the game,” said Moyes, whose side are eighth in the Premier League table.

“But they did it – they showed great energy after the midweek game to keep going right until the end.

“Stoke haven’t scored many this year but they haven’t conceded that many either so when you concede a goal against them early then you have to work hard to win the game.”

Moyes continued: “On a couple of occasions we didn’t defend as well as we’d like and it cost us.

“Maybe it will be a [turning point]. Let’s hope that we just keep winning.

“I understand that you’ve got to do it with a bit of style here but the boys certainly did it with style in the last 20 minutes, that’s for sure.”
