Man United 4 Fulham 1: Sir Alex wants to end 10-year wait for FA Cup crown
Man United 4 Fulham 1: Sir Alex Ferguson says he wants the Red Devils to end their 10-year wait to win the FA Cup this season
Sir Alex Ferguson admits that he wants Manchester United to end their 10-year wait to lift the FA Cup again after a convincing victory over Fulham in the fourth round.
United took the lead inside 10 minutes when Ryan Giggs scored from the penalty spot after Aaron Hughes was adjudged to have handled Chris Smalling’s goal-bound header.
Five minutes after the interval, Wayne Rooney scored his second successive goal in the FA Cup this season, with Javier Hernández netting a quick-fire brace to seal their progress.
Martin Jol’s side managed to produce a late consolation thanks to Hughes, who made amends for his earlier error.
“The FA Cup is an important trophy for us this seaso,” Ferguson told BBC Sport.
“We haven’t won it for 10 years. Rio Ferdinand has never won an FA Cup medal, so we need to do something about that.
“The four strikers we had in 1999 were fantastic players but we have four now who are equally as good. If we can get three or four players around the 20-goal bracket then we’re in business.”
Meanwhile Jol was disappointed that his side conceded yet another early goal, as the Cottagers did in a 2-0 loss to Manchester City last weekend, which left the west London side with a tough task to turn the tie around.
“Luckily enough Manchester United only scored four goals because it was one of those days where we could have lost by six or seven,” said Jol.
“We were probably caught in two thoughts. It was the same last week when we conceded a goal in the second minute.
“We tried to have good intentions, but we couldn’t link up from the back. We now have to concentrate on the league.”
