Man United boss David Moyes heaps praise on Ryan Giggs
Manchester United manager David Moyes heaps praise on player-coach Ryan Giggs after a 1-0 victory over Liverpool
David Moyes spoke of his admiration for Ryan Giggs after the player-coach helped mastermind Manchester United’s League Cup third-round win against Liverpool.
The Red Devils were left smarting following a 4-1 drubbing at Manchester City on Sunday and the club’s long-term servant Giggs brought much-needed experience to the starting line-up at Old Trafford.
United had the better of the early exchanges before Liverpool started to threaten largely through Victor Moses and Luis Suárez, who made his return from a 10-match suspension in the Capital One Cup tie.
Mexico international Javier Hernández was at his potent best to capitalise on poor Liverpool marking from a 46th-minute United corner and steer the winner past Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
“We had to try and come out and show something a bit better than we had done (against Liverpool and City),” Moyes told BBC Sport.
“We had to bounce back and I thought it was a good result tonight. It’s given me a chance to see some players I haven’t seen much and it’s given me food for thought.”
He added:”Ryan Giggs was great tonight, his play was great, he’s some player he really is.”
Moyes was rewarded for his side’s efforts with a fourth-round tie against Chris Hughton’s Norwich City at Old Trafford.
But the United manager insisted his players would not underestimate the Canaries despite avoiding big names such as Chelsea and Manchester City in the draw.
“You really only want home draws, Norwich are a good side. We’ll give them the respect they deserve.”
