Sir Alex Ferguson claims Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick was long overdue a PFA player of the year nomination.

The 31-year-old joined Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard, Juan Mata, Luis Suárez and Robin van Persie on the six-man shortlist to pick up the end-year accolade on 28 April.

Carrick has been one of United’s standout performers this term, scoring once and making four assists, while racking up a staggering 2,442 passes in the Premier League.

“This has been Michael’s best ever season at United. He’s been absolutely magnificent,” said Ferguson.

“It’s amazing Michael has had to wait until he’s 31 to get nominated for anything – but he deserves it.”

Ferguson reserved special praise for Netherlands international Van Persie, who has scored 22 Premier League goals after joining from Arsenal last August.

Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck was named as a nominee for young player of the year but faces competition from Bale, Christian Benteke, Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Jack Wilshere.

“They [Van Persie and Welbeck] deserve to be nominated, there’s no doubt about that. And I obviously hope one of them wins,” added Ferguson.

“Robin has had a fantastic season – his goals emphasise the impact he has made at our club. Both of them deserve to be there and I hope one of them wins it.

“Danny has also shown some great performances this season for us and his country, and I’m delighted for him too.”
