Manchester United are ready to make Wayne Rooney the highest-paid player in Premier League history according to the News of the World.

The Red Devils are reportedly set to offer the England international a staggering £170,000-a-week contract when negotiations commence in February.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed an impressive start to the season, scoring seven league goals and becoming a crucial cog on the Old Trafford machine since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure.

Should Rooney be offered a contract in the region of the one described in the report, it would make him the highest-paid player in the history of Manchester United and the Premier League.

Negotiations between the player and the bosses at Old Trafford are expected to begin after Rooney’s agent returns from a nine-month ban after being charged for misconduct over the acquisition of his client.

United cruised to a 3-0 victory over Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday evening, securing three points that sees Sir Alex Ferguson’s side move ahead of Arsenal into second.

The Gunners slumped to a 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light while leaders Chelsea demolished Wolves 4-0 at Stamford Bridge.
