Tom Cleverley says he is continuing to learn from Manchester United legend Paul Scholes as the youngster bids to improve his own performances.

The 23-year-old is viewed as a long term successor to Scholes at the Red Devils, with the veteran playmaker’s contract set to expire in the summer.

Cleverley was part of the England side who were emphatic 8-0 winners against Group H minnows San Marino in their 2014 World Cup qualifier on Friday night.

The former Wigan Athletic midfielder, who has started each of Roy Hodgson’s competitive games in charge of England, revealed he is closely studying the 10-time Premier League winner’s style of play.

“Scholesey is a great example to have around, just watching and learning,” Cleverley told the Daily Express.

“On the pitch I can learn a lot of things from him, the way he plays his game from short to long.

“He’s one of the best in the world, and has been for many years, at keeping the ball. Not only just keeping the ball, but hurting teams.

“That’s a big part of Scholesy’s game. You can keep the ball as long as you want, playing it sideways 10 yards, but he also hurts teams which you have to have in your game at this level.”
