Costa, 25, has been in sparkling form this term, netting 19 goals in 20 games in all competitions for Diego Simeone’s men.
With United looking to strengthen in January, Moyes was reported to have attended the Champions League clash to eye up potential targets.
But Atletico sporting director sporting director Jose Luis Caminero revealed Moyes didn’t confirm the purpose of his trip.
Caminero said: “I suppose he came to see us because Atletico are a Champions League team and because they also qualified for the last 16.
“We spoke, but he didn’t tell me exactly why he had come.”
Costa has scored 39 goals in 64 appearances for Atletico after returning from a season-long loan at Rayo Vallecano in 2012.
