Bayern Munich have no plans to make a bid for want-away Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, according to the club’s sporting director Matthias Sammer.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who is set to retire at the end of the season, revealed that the newly-crowned Premier League champions have recently rejected a transfer request from the striker.

Rooney has endured a difficult season, with the England international struggling to produce his best form and only managing a disappointing 12 Premier League goals.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a possible switch to Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, but Sammer has played down speculation linking the Bundesliga side with the England forward.

“I don’t know what Rooney would bring to the Bundesliga. I can’t answer that,” said Stammer.

“I can answer that we have great respect for Wayne Rooney, but there has been no contact with him.

“He is not on the agenda. No, no. Absolutely not.”

On Sunday, Moyes was keen to emphasise Rooney’s qualities as the Everton manager prepares to take charge of United in the summer.

“When he left Everton, he was already an outstanding player,” Moyes told the Telegraph.

“Some of the things he used to do in training, we would stand back and look at each other as if to say, ‘How did he do that?’ He was and is an exceptional talent.”
