David De Gea has dismissed speculation linking him with a return to Spain by insisting he is “very happy” at Manchester United.

The Manchester United goalkeeper has impressed for the Red Devils in recent months after initially coming under criticism for a series of high-profile errors following his transfer to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

De Gea has been reported to be a surprise target for Barcelona in recent weeks but the 22-year-old insists he is settled at Old Trafford.

He told Spanish newspaper AS: “I’ve got three years left on my contract here and the truth is I’m very happy here, this is a great club and you only realise that when you are in it from the inside.

“When people criticise you it often doesn’t make much sense, but I prefer not to listen to it very much and just get on with training and playing games.”

De Gea also compared Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and described the pair as father figures to the younger players.

“They are both great coaches and each is his own man, but the two are very paternalistic,” he added. “I know Ferguson a bit more than Del Bosque, he’s like a father, especially for the young players.”
