David De Gea says he can’t imagine Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney not being at Old Trafford next season.
The England international’s future is still in doubt after Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the forward had a transfer request rejected in May amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
The 27-year-old endured an indifferent season at the Red Devils despite scoring 12 top-flight goals as Ferguson’s men secured the Premier League title.
De Gea revealed Rooney is still one of the most influential players at the club and can’t see the Englishman leaving the club this summer.
“I can’t imagine that Rooney will not be at United,” said De Gea. “He is one of our captains and points of reference on the pitch. He still has to win many titles with us at United.”
De Gea earned plenty of plaudits for his improvement throughout the course of the season, culminating in a place in the PFA Premier League team of the year.
And the Spain Under-21 international was disappointed to see Ferguson, who signed De Gea in a £17m deal from Atletico Madrid in 2011, call time on his career.
“I felt great sadness when I heard about Ferguson’s goodbye,” he added.
“It will be strange not to see him on the bench or on the training ground. He is everything at Manchester United. He is Manchester United.
“He [Moyes] had done a great job at Everton and now all of us have to support him.
“To substitute Ferguson is a huge target but if they chose him to do it, it is because he is prepared.”
