Mata could face Solskjaer’s Cardiff side on Tuesday night – and the former United striker is hoping the Spaniard won’t make his debut until next weekend.
“I hope he will have to wait until next week to play,” Solskjaer told BBC Sport.
“He is one of the top players in European or world football and he has done fantastically well at Chelsea. Manchester United have signed a top, top player.”
On potentially managing United in the future, the Norwegian added: “I looked at it the day I got the job, ‘when do we play Man United?’
“But since then it has been so busy, I haven’t had time to think about it.”
Meanwhile, the Cardiff City boss revealed that the Bluebirds are close to signing Kenwyne Jones in a swap deal, with Peter Odemwingie set to move to the Potters.
“There is potential to do a deal with Peter Odemwingie going to Stoke and Kenwyne Jones coming to us,” he added.
“I can’t confirm anything until deals are done and medicals are done but we are a long way down that road. I can’t say anything else about any other players.”
