Man United transfers: Kit deal will give Red Devils ‘spectacular’ advantage

Former Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow believes that Manchester United’s new kit deal will hand them a “spectacular” advantage in the transfer market.

The Red Devils agreed a 10-year contract with Adidas last week worth £750m after Nike opted not to extend its partnership with the Old Trafford club.

And Purslow feels that Louis van Gaal’s side will gain a massive advantage from the increase in revenue in the coming seasons.

“If Manchester United were to stay out of the Champions League then this deal, which is £50m a year up on the existing Nike contract, would more than compensate them,” Purslow told talkSPORT.

“What they plan to do is have both. The advantage they will have over their rivals is spectacular.

“No other club garners more than £30m a year [on shirt deals] and Man United will be handed £75m. That’s a £45m advantage. In the world of financial fair play, they can spend all of that on players.

“Nike turned this deal down. They had a contractual right to match it but they very aggressively went on the record last week to say, ‘it doesn’t make financial sense’.”
