Real Madrid president Florentino Perez says he wants Cristiano Ronaldo to stay this summer amid speculation linking him with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Portugal international’s future at Los Blancos has been in doubt for most of the season after the forward admitted he was “sad” at the club last September.

Ronaldo’s compatriot Jose Mourinho is set to leave Madrid at the end of the season but Perez doesn’t want the 28-year-old follow his manager’s lead.

“He told me in the summer he was sad and I told him we would do everything possible for him to be content,” Perez told Cadena Ser.

“I don’t know if he has an offer from PSG. I think Cristiano is the best player in the world. We want to build the Madrid of the future around him and I would like Cristiano to be the best-paid player in the world.”

Ronaldo spent six seasons at Manchester United between 2003 and 2009 and Old Trafford has inevitably been touted as a possible destination for the forward should he leave the La Liga giants.

Speaking after Real Madrid’s Champions League last-16 triumph over United back in March, Ronaldo refused to rule out a possible return to the Premier League champions.

“The future we never know, but the supporters here [at United] and the club are massive,” Ronaldo said on 5 March. “At this moment I am very happy in Madrid and I want to be there.”

Meanwhile, Perez also revealed Madrid were unable to sign Barcelona-bound Neymar due to the conditions attached to the deal which would have resulted in Los Blancos shelling out £128m for the striker.

“If we had been able to sign Neymar without altering the eco-system of the club we would have, but there were too many conditions attached.

“It would have cost us €150million (£128m). I don’t know how much it cost Barcelona.”
