Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United have rejected a transfer request from Wayne Rooney.

The 27-year-old was left out of United’s squad for Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Swansea City after reports linked him with a possible switch to Bayern Munich in the summer.

Rooney has endured a miserable season by his high standards, with the United striker managing 12 goals from 22 Premier League starts.

Ferguson, who is set to retire at the end of the season, admitted the England international has asked to leave but the Red Devils boss wants Rooney to go away and consider his future.

“I don’t think Wayne Rooney was keen to play as he has asked for a transfer,” Ferguson told BBC Sport.

“We are not going to let him go. I think he’s just frustrated at not playing as much as he’d like in the last couple of weeks.”

He added: “We have refused it. I think he should go away and think it over again. He wasn’t happy about being taken off a few times this season but a Wayne Rooney in top form wouldn’t be taken off.”

Rooney has scored 197 goals in 400 appearances for United after completing a £26m move to the Red Devils from Everton in 2005.
