Davd Moyes believes Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will benefit from a rest after being suspended for their clash against Newcastle United.

The 28-year-old forward picked up his fifth caution of the season in a 1-0 loss to Everton at Old Trafford on Wednesday which resulted in a one-game suspension.

We have to try and make the most of it and keep Wayne fresh and ready to play

Rooney has been United’s standout performer, scoring eight goals, despite the defending champions struggling in the opening months of their title defence.

Despite admitting the England international is a big miss, the 50-year-old United boss looked to the positives of Rooney’s absence for the Magpies clash.

“It is a big loss to lose Wayne,” Moyes said.

“That was always going to be the case. We have not had a chance to rest him or give him a break. This has given us an opportunity. He is having Friday and Saturday off. They are probably the only days he has had off this year.

“Obviously we would rather him not be suspended. But he is and we have to try and make the most of it and keep Wayne fresh and ready to play because he has been in great form all season and we have been really pleased with him.”
