Michael Carrick admits it feels like Manchester United are suffering “setback after setback” this season.

The Red Devils were leading 2-1 with a minute remaining of injury time before Fulham striker Darren Bent scored a last-gasp equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.

It’s one of those seasons, setback after setback, and we have just got to pick ourselves up

The defending champions had cancelled out Steve Sidwell’s first-half opener thanks to quick-fire goals from Robin van Persie and midfielder Carrick.

And the England international encouraged United to keep believing that their season can improve, despite trailing fourth-placed Liverpool by nine points.

“Letting it slip like that is criminal,” Carrick told MUTV. “It’s a tough one to take, it’s hard to explain how we’ve only come away with a point. It was an incredible game, so one-sided.

“It’s one of those seasons, setback after setback, and we have just got to pick ourselves up. We have to believe that with performances, things are going to change.”

Carrick added: “I haven’t been involved in a game like that in my career.

“It’s so frustrating because we should have scored more. We’re very disappointed to concede twice, considering the amount of time they spent in our half, never mind our box.”
