Man United’s Robin van Persie ‘honoured’ by Puskas award nomination
The Manchester United striker was thrilled to see his goal named on the shortlist for the prize
Robin van Persie has described his pride at being nominated for the Fifa Puskas goal of the year award.
The Manchester United striker’s diving header in the Netherlands’ 5-1 thrashing of Spain at the World Cup was named as one of the 10 contenders for the prize, with the winner set to be announced at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Zurich in January.
Van Persie tweeted: “Very honoured with the nomination of “the goal of the year worldwide” – the FIFA Puskas award.”
Fifa described the goal as follows: “The Netherlands were 1-0 down to Spain when Daley Blind launched a high, hanging ball forward towards Robin van Persie.
“The watching world expected the Oranje captain to take it down but he instead produced a first-time header from just inside the box, which looped over Iker Casillas and set his side en route to a stunning 5-1 victory.”
