David De Gea insists that he is Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper, despite the Spaniard’s latest error in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The 22-year-old was criticised for failing to adequately punch clear a cross whipped into United’s area deep into stoppage time, leading to Clint Dempsey’s late leveller at White Hart Lane.

It was the latest in a string of high-profile errors as the Spain Under-21 international continues to come to terms with the rigorous nature of the Premier League.

Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson has alternated between De Gea and Anders Lindegaard for much of the youngster’s time at the club, but he now appears to be United’s number one.

Lindegaard has not featured in the league since a disastrous performance at Reading in early December – and De Gea is enjoying a sustained run in the first-team.

“From the moment I signed I considered myself the first-choice keeper at the club but it’s down to the manager,” De Gea told the Daily Mirror.

“He rotates us when he feels it’s good for the team.

“But obviously I’ve played a few on the bounce now and that’s positive. For a goalkeeper it’s always important to have consistency and to be playing regularly. It’s good for confidence and morale.”

De Gea made his 60th appearance for United after completing a £17m move to the Red Devils from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
