‘Man United boss David Moyes must start Wayne Rooney v Chelsea’
Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson says Manchester United'a David Moyes must start Wayne Rooney against Chelsea
David Moyes should start Wayne Rooney for Manchester United’s clash against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday night, according to Mark Lawrenson.
The Premier League champions have already rejected two bids for the England international from the west London side in the summer transfer window.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his desire to bring the 27-year-old to Stamford Bridge, naming the striker as his top summer target.
Moyes introduced Rooney as a second-half substitute in their opening 4-1 victory over Swansea last weekend, but former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes United must start the forward.
“Does Moyes play Rooney? I would, you need your best players regardless of his current situation and the spotlight would be on the England striker to put in a performance,” Lawrenson writes in the Mirror.
“I think Wayne thrives on that, he loves it. All top players love that and they want to play in the big games and have everyone look at them. It also puts him under pressure to come and play and show how good he is, and in his case, possibly show both teams.”
