Michael Carrick has singled out Wayne Rooney for special praise after the Manchester United striker’s man-of-the-match display at Stoke City on Sunday.
Rooney’s future has been the subject of speculation this season after failing to hold down a regular spot in Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, with the England international limited to just 19 Premier League starts this term.
However, the 27-year-old, who has been linked with a summer transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, went some way to silencing his doubters with an impressive display in central midfield at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday.
And Carrick believes Rooney is in as good shape as he has ever been ahead of United’s trip to West Ham on Wednesday night.
“He is terrific to play with,” Carrick told talkSPORT.
“His awareness, his timing of runs makes it a lot easier for us in midfield. Maybe lesser players make the run but it’s not at the right time and you can’t find him and the chance is lost.
“Wayne has got that sense of timing so he can create the space for himself. He is scoring goals, he is making goals, and that is something he has always done.”
United can take a step closer to a 20th top-flight title with victory at Upton Park on Wednesday – but Carrick insists the Red Devils will not be complacent in the run-in.
“There is plenty of work to do still,” he added. “We are well aware of not thinking too far ahead.
“We have got tough games coming up and it is about looking to the next one, looking to win that one, and that’s all we can focus on at this stage. We can dream about things as they come along after that.”
