Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand says that it will be the medals - not personal fortune - that counts at the end of his career

Rio Ferdinand believes that his career will only be defined by the medals the Manchester United defender has won – and not the wealth that has arrived as a result of his success.

The 34-year-old has won five Premier League titles, the League Cup twice and the Champions League at Old Trafford, while also racking up 81 England caps.

The former Leeds United man has also made a considerable personal fortune, with Ferdinand pro-active off the pitch with various business ventures – but the Peckham-born defender insists it is his on-pitch honours that will matter most to him at the end of his career.

“People talk about money and all the stuff that goes on around football, but to me, it just comes back to winning,” said Ferdinand.

“It doesn’t matter how much money you have, at the end of your career, what you will be most proud of are your achievements.

“If you have won things and continue to win things for this great club, that is something to talk about.

“I wouldn’t sit down and talk about how much money I have. It would be more to do with what good times we had and some of the sorrow moments, when we lost games we should have won.

“Football is the most important thing. At Manchester United, winning is definitely at the top of everyone’s agenda.”
