Man United’s Ryan Giggs: I hope Gareth Bale can reach ‘very top’
Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs says he hopes his compatriot Gareth Bale can make it to the "very top" of world football
Ryan Giggs says he hopes Gareth Bale makes it to the “very top” of world football ahead of Manchester United’s clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
The 39-year-old has long been a beacon for Welsh football, having won 12 Premier League titles, the Champions League twice and countless domestic cups with United.
Giggs was also capped 64 times by Wales before retiring from international duty in 2007, with Bale viewed as the United star’s natural successor for the Dragons.
The Red Devils veteran rates Bale highly and is optimistic his young compatriot can reach the same lofty heights as he has during a decorated 22-year career.
“Gareth is brilliant,” said Giggs. “He has so much to his game and over the last season or so he has improved a lot.
“He is not just a left-winger. He can play in various positions. I have seen him play up front for Wales. I have seen him play off the front and on the right.
“He is such an exciting player, but more than that, he has a good attitude as well. He can go far in the game. And whilst I hope he has an off-day this weekend, as a fellow Welshman I hope it is to the very top.”
Tottenham inflicted United’s only Premier League defeat at home this season in September when they secured a surprise 3-2 victory.
The Red Devils are seven points clear of nearest rivals Manchester City at the top of the table, but Giggs insists there is no room for complacency at White Hart Lane on Sunday.
“When you have a seven-point advantage you just have to look after yourself and the rest will take care of itself,” added Giggs.
“People spoke so much about us playing first last weekend, this time it is roles reversed.
“But we are not thinking about that. We are just thinking about a tough game at White Hart Lane against a very good Tottenham side who have already beaten us this year.
“We know what we are up against. We know that it is going to be hard. But games with Tottenham are always brilliant to be involved in. Hopefully we can get the right result.”
