Wayne Rooney believes his best position is “definitely” playing as a centre-forward amid continuing uncertainty surrounding his Manchester United future.

In May, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the club had rejected a transfer request from the 27-year-old after a disappointing season at Old Trafford.

The England international made 22 Premier League starts in a variety of positions for United this season, scoring a modest 12 top-flight goals, while Robin van Persie netted 26 times.

But Rooney, who has been linked with a move to Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain, feels most comfortable playing as a centre-forward and not in a deeper midfield role.

“In the years to come, that might be somewhere I could play, but, right now, I’m definitely a centre-forward. I’m after more goals,” Rooney told FourFourTwo magazine.

“I’ve played up front on my own a few times for Manchester United and it’s a role I’m very comfortable with and have no problems playing.

“When you play as a target man, you have to stay up front and help the team out by holding the ball up and waiting for support. That all comes with experience.

“It’s a good role for me to play, and hopefully I can continue doing well there.”

Rooney has scored 197 goals in 400 appearances for United after completing a £25.6m move to the Red Devils from Everton.
