Wayne Rooney claims the gashed leg that caused him to miss the early stages of the season has been beneficial in the Manchester United striker’s bid for full fitness.

Rooney was carried off on a stretcher after suffering the injury during the 3-2 win over Fulham at Old Trafford back in August and missed a month of football.

The England striker admits he was probably not in top shape following pre-season but insists the hard work he has put in following his injury means he is now feeling fitter than ever.

“When I came back in pre-season I wasn’t out of shape,” Rooney said. “I was probably not as fit as I could have been, whether that’s because I didn’t have the time to get the training in I don’t know.

“I got injured since but I have worked hard. To be honest it probably helped me to get fit, getting injured. I feel good, I feel fit, I feel ready to go and play.”

Rooney also admitted he is enjoying playing in a deeper role for Manchester United and says he would be willing to do the same for England against San Marino on Friday night.

“It is physically demanding,” he continued. “You are involved in the game and it is obviously demanding, getting up and down. I enjoy it, if the manager wants me to play there on Friday I will be happy to do so.

“Obviously playing up front you get more opportunities to score goals but as a footballer you want to play football. You are involved and you’re on the ball, so I enjoy it.”
