Money alone is not enough, Marco Motta warns Man City

Juventus right-back Marco Motta has criticised Manchester City’s transfer policy ahead of this week’s Europa League clash between the two sides.

Motta believes City, who welcome the Serie A side to Eastlands for their Group A encounter on Thursday, have proven that spending big does not necessarily guarantee immediate results.

City’s acquisition of the likes of Yaya Toure, David Silva and Mario Balotelli took Roberto Mancini’s spending past the €120 million mark this summer but despite the influx of international talent, the Eastlands club have endured a mixed start to the season.

“City is proof of how big-name signings and big spending, almost €100million if I’m not mistaken, is not enough to obtain great results,” said the Italy international.

However, despite his criticism of City’s transfer dealings, Motta also warned his team-mates the Premier League side must be not be underestimated.

“It’s clear that they are a rival that has all of our respect and we will have to be on guard,” said the former Roma defender.

Motta’s club enjoyed an encouraging 4-2 victory in Turin on Sunday as they appeared to exorcise the demons of their midweek home defeat to Palermo, and the defender admits it may take time for the team to settle into more consistent form.

“We are trying to adapt with the arrival of at least 10 new elements this summer,” said Motta. “To assemble the newcomers takes time.

“Winning helps you win, and allows you to train meeting the expectations of the fans, the club and a great coach like we have.”
