Michael Owen joked that it was a relief to watch a straightforward Liverpool win following Tuesday night’s 5-0 victory over Maribor.

Liverpool made the breakthrough in the fourth minute thanks to Roberto Firmino’s precise finish from six yards out.

The Reds doubled their lead eight minute later when Philippe Coutinho scored his second Champions League goal of the campaign with scruffy strike.

The Merseyside outfit were 3-0 up in the 19th minute when Mohamed Salah slotted a finish past the Maribor goalkeeper to put the result beyond doubt.

Liverpool exerted their dominance with a fourth goal on the stroke of half-time thanks to Salah’s second of the night in the Champions League.

Firmino doubled his tally and made it 5-0 with a deft header to further extend Liverpool’s lead with 35 minutes to play in Slovenia.

Substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored his first Liverpool goal since his £40m move from Arsenal before Trent Alexander-Arnold polished off a 7-0 win.

And ex Liverpool striker Owen was pleased to see the Reds enjoy a straightforward win.

“An early goal settled the nerves,” Owen told BT Sport.

“After that, it has been one way traffic. It’s great to watch a game and not be on the edge of your seat.”

Owen added: “It was beautiful to see.”

Liverpool hoisted themselves to the top of Champions League Group F following their resounding win against Maribor after back-to-back stalemates with Sevilla and Spartak Moscow.

The Reds will make the trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon following last weekend’s goalless draw with Manchester United at Anfield.
