Arsene Wenger heaped praise on the “outstanding” Aaron Ramsey after the midfielder continued his fine run of form with a goal in Wednesday’s Champions League win at Marseille.

After a goalless first-half at the Stade Velodrome, Theo Walcott gave the visitors the lead with an impressive volley in the 65th minute, before Ramsey drilled home his sixth goal of the season late on.

Jordan Ayew’s late penalty proved nothing more than a consolation for Marseille as the Gunners kicked off their group-stage campaign with a win.

And Wenger was full of praise for the Wales international after another impressive display from the 22-year-old.

“His form is outstanding and that’s linked with confidence,” said Wenger. “Why? He used to always be in a good position in the box and couldn’t score. Now, every time he is in good positions he does.

“Scoring goals is a little cyclic. You have cycles where everything goes for you and cycles when it’s a bit less.”

Wenger’s side had to withstand some intense periods of Marseille pressure in the first half – and the Frenchman praised his side for keeping the Ligue 1 outfit at bay before the break.

“It was important for us not to give the first goal away,” he continued. “Marseille had an excellent first half and we were a bit timid overall.

“In the second half they dropped and we took advantage of our good moments in the game. In the end it was a win linked with patience and experience, even if we were not flamboyant. And we start with three points, which is good.”

Wenger also had time to praise Walcott after the England international netted his first goal of the season in style.

“He maybe scored the most simple of the chances that he’s had since the start of the season,” he said. “But it will give him a needed boost, because when you miss a chance you always wonder when you’ll score.

“That’s done now and I’m sure that he’ll continue to score.”
