Martin Keown has urged Arsenal to follow Manchester United’s example and take the Europa League seriously next season.

The Red Devils won the Europa League trophy on Wednesday night thanks to Manchester United’s 2-0 win against Eredivisie giants Ajax in the final in Stockholm.

Manchester United secured a return to the Champions League by virtue of winning the Europa League as Jose Mourinho finished the silverware with two trophies.

Arsenal haven’t won the Champions League despite their supreme record of qualifying for Europe’s premier club competition over the past 21 seasons.

Keown was part of the Arsenal side that lost to Turkish outfit Galatasaray in the Uefa Cup final back in 2000.

Speaking to the Daily Mail about whether Arsenal should take the Europa League seriously next season, former Gunners defender Keown said:

“Arsenal fans have said they would sooner swap qualifying for the Champions League every year for a trophy. Now Arsenal have the chance to do both by winning the Europa League!

“Last season, only a poor second-half performance against Sevilla prevented Liverpool from gaining a back-door entry into the Champions League and now Manchester United have achieved it.

“Rewarding the Europa League champions with qualification to Europe’s elite competition has really enhanced the tournament. It is a fitting reward — you have to go through so many hoops to win it!”

Arsenal can still finish the season with some silverware if the north London side beat Premier League champions Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday evening.
