Martinez gives latest Everton injury update ahead of Man City clash
Everton manager Roberto Martinez is confident Phil Jagielka will be ready for their clash against Manchester City
Roberto Martinez believes Everton captain Phil Jagielka will be fully recovered to take his place in the Toffees squad for the visit of Manchester City on Saturday.
The England international has been sidelined since February, but the former Sheffield United defender could go straight back into the starting line-up to face the Citizens at Goodison Park.
The work that he [Jagielka] has done so far shows me that he will be ready. I’m confident that he will be ready
“Phil Jagielka is recovering well and always the plan was for him to be in the squad for Manchester City and we’re hoping that’s the case,” Martinez told his pre-match media conference.
“The work that he has done so far shows me that he will be ready. I’m confident that he will be ready.”
Jagielka’s fellow centre-half Sylvain Distin is also recovering from a hamstring issue which the French defender picked up in a 2-0 victory over Manchester United last month.
However, Everton manager Martinez isn’t sure whether the former Citizens defender will be ready to be part of the squad for their must-win clash on Saturday.
“Sylvain came off with a soft tissue problem against Manchester United,” Martinez added.
“He is going to train today and we will assess him and see how he is. It is very important for us that Sylvain finishes the season.
“It is difficult to say if he will be involved at this stage.”
The Everton manager also backed winger Kevin Mirallas to be ready to take his place in Belgium’s World Cup squad after a small groin tear in a 2-0 victory over the Red Devils.
“Well. Kevin is just a short-term problem that he has. I expect Kevin to be fully fit mid-May. He would have been fit to play the FA Cup final. He has no doubts to be fit for the World Cup campaign.”
