Italy midfielder Mauro Camoranesi has been handed a $50,000 fine for a tackle that injured an opponent during a match in Argentina 16 years ago.

An Argentinian court ruled against the Juventus star as he was ordered to pay indemnity for his challenge on Roberto Pizzo on 14 August 1994.

The victim required surgery and a lengthy recovery period after being “kicked” by the then 17-year-old during a match in Buenos Aires.

According to Argentinian newspaper Clarín, the Civil and Commercial court in Mar del Plata ordered the former Club Atletico Banfield player to pay damges after ending Pizzo’s career.

The ruling stated: “Although it’s not possible to describe Camoranesi’s action as deliberately intentional, it was incredibly clumsy … abnormal and avoidable.”

Camoranesi left Argentina’s top division for Cruz Azul in 1998. Following a two-year spell in Mexico he moved to Serie A, joining Verona and in 2002 he made the switch to Juventus.

He holds dual citzenship as an Italian-Argentine but opted to represent Italy at national level and was a key member of Italy’s World Cup-winning team in 2006.
