Micah Richards heaps praise on Manchester City's defence for keeping a clean sheet in a 3-0 win against Sunderland
Micah Richards heaped praise on Manchester City’s defence after the Citizens eased to a straightforward 3-0 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Aleksandar Kolarov gave Mancini’s men a fourth-minute lead with a superb free-kick to take his tally to four goals for club and country this season.
Second-half substitute Sergio Aguero then netted from close range after good work from Kolarov, before James Milner added a third in the 87th minute.
Richards was delighted to help the Citizens keep their first clean sheet of the campaign as the England international made his return from an ankle injury picked up at the Olympics.
“It’s nice to get back after so long,” said Richards.
“But obviously it’s nice to keep a clean sheet. We’ve not kept a clean sheet yet this season.
“I thought the back four was outstanding today. James Milner was my man of the match. He was outstanding and it felt like he was everywhere.
“Obviously Kolarov had a good game as well, so it was an all round good team performance. I’m happy to be back.”
Richards also hailed Joleon Lescott who returned to Mancini’s first-team after being dropped for their recent ties against Borussia Dortmund and Fulham.
“He’s a quality defender,” added Richards.
“A lot of people don’t understand how good he really is. He’s a top class centre-back and one of the best in the Premier League.”
