Uefa president Michel Platini: I’m against any technology in sport

Uefa president Michel Platini once again voices his disapproval at the concept of goal-line technology in football

Michel Platini has once again confirmed his stance against the introduction of goal-line technology in football, despite Fifa giving the green light to the system this summer.

The Uefa president, who has overseen the introduction of additional goalmouth officials as opposed to goal-line technology in both the Champions League and Europa League, does not look likely to change his viewpoint any time soon.

“I haven’t yet seen any results [of experiments] of the goal-line technology and I don’t know how much it could cost,” Platini said.

“I am against any technology in sport, I think that arbitration should be in football and I think that football in this respect should be human and that is part of our sport.

“Maybe in other disciplines it is important, but not in sport.”

Platini also said that Uefa are waiting for feedback from the 53 European member associations on his idea of playing the Euro 2020 finals in 12 European cities across the continent.

“As you know the price of World Cup 2018 is very high and you can imagine how expensive that will be,” he continued. “We will keep this idea in mind but we are waiting for an answer from the national associations.

“Do they like this idea or not? And only then can we say whether we can organise the 2020 European Championships in several European cities.”
