Jermain Defoe admitted he will have to continue proving himself after the striker scored in England’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Moldova in their opening World Cup qualifier.

Frank Lampard scored twice inside the opening 30 minutes to give the visitors a commanding lead, before Defoe sent a rasping shot past Stanislav Namasco on the stroke of half-time.

Roy Hodgson’s side wrapped up England’s biggest away win since 1993 courtesy of second-half strikes from James Milner and Leighton Baines to put the Three Lions top of Group H.

“It was good to get a start, a 50th cap, a goal, a good win. It was a great night for me,” said Defoe.

“It was important to win the game and to be patient but the early goal helped. To get a goal as well was fantastic.

“I’ve got two in two but I think everyone has got to keep proving themselves to be honest – not just me.

“I’m sure all the lads would say that as well.”

England captain Steven Gerrard and Lampard started in central midfield together, and the Chelsea midfielder believes the pair dismissed any concerns over their ability to play in the same side.

“It was nice for myself and Stevie to combine for the second goal. You’ve got to keep giving them [the doubters] answers,” added Lampard.

“It was a good ball. But then Stevie is always a pleasure to play with because he is a top player.

“It was also great to be back involved in a competitive game after missing the European Championships through injury.”
