Fabio Capello insisted Wayne Rooney’s dismissal against Montenegro was a product of his frustration at England’s performance, and did not stem from matters off the pitch.

The England head coach fielded questions about Rooney’s frame of mind after the Manchester United striker was issued a straight red card or kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic during their 2-2 draw in Podgorica.

And although Capello admitted the England forward deserved to receive his marching orders, he refused to accept Rooney was acting out frustration over the ongoing police investigation involving his father, Wayne senior.

“The player is frustrated from [what happened] on the pitch not from what happened away from it,” said Capello.

“I think the red card for Rooney was right. The next game he will be suspended so we will try to find new solutions.

“Rooney is an important player but sometimes important players don’t play well and make mistakes. It will be good lesson for him and the team.”

First-half goals from Ashley Young and Darren Bent helped the visitors to race into an early lead, with their passage to Euro 2012 seemingly looking comfortable.

However, Elsad Zverotic pulled one back for the home side and Andrija Delibasic nodded home a late equaliser after England were reduced to 10-men courtesy of Rooney’s petulance.

Goalscorer Darren Bent was thrilled at England’s qualification for the main tournament despite the somewhat disppointing result on Friday.

“It’s a massive achievement for the country,” said Bent. “It’s been difficult at times and it was a tough game but we got the job done and we look forward to the Euros.”
