“I really feel I have a lot more work to do,” said Sharapova. “There’s quite a bit of time until then [the US Open].
She continued: “It was a tough match. I thought my opponent played a really good match. I couldn’t find my rhythm from the beginning of the match.
“I always had my back against the wall and always came back from behind.
“Even though I felt like I started feeling a little bit better, it wasn’t enough in the end.”
Meanwhile, Petra Kvitova’s first tournament since her Wimbledon win also came to an end on Thursday as she was beaten in Montreal by Ekaterina Makarova. The Russian overcame world No4 Kvitova 6-4 1-6 6-2.
