New Zealand v England: Chris Woakes replaces Tim Bresnan, who is struggling with an elbow injury, in the 15-man Test squad
Chris Woakes has replaced Tim Bresnan in England’s 15-man Test squad for their New Zealand tour in March.
Bresnan will be rested for the three-match series against the Kiwis, which starts in Dunedin on 6 March, as he bids to recover from a niggling elbow injury.
Woakes, who is uncapped at Test level, is the only player in the squad who was not part of England’s recent Test series against India.
Batsmen Eoin Morgan and Samit Patel have been dropped from the Test squad that sealed a 2-1 on the subcontinent before Christmas.
“With Tim Bresnan currently unavailable while his elbow is assessed there is a good opportunity for Chris Woakes to gain further experience in the international environment,” said national selector Geoff Miller.
“We have a busy international summer ahead of us and the medical team felt this was an ideal opportunity for Bresnan to take some time out to ensure his elbow is functioning effectively.
“Woakes has impressed on the England Performance Programme and with England Lions and Warwickshire in recent years as well as with England in the limited overs formats.”
Meanwhile, England’s selectors have made one change to the T20 squad to face New Zealand with Woakes replacing Bresnan, whose availability for the rest of the winter will be determined following medical advice.
Joe Root, James Harris and Woakes have been called into the one-day squad for the three-match series against New Zealand next month.
But Craig Kieswetter has been omitted from the ODI squad, with the selectors hoping that the wicketkeeper will benefit from a period with Somerset to prepare for the domestic season.
“Craig Kieswetter has had an extended opportunity in ODI and T20 cricket,” added Miller. “He has shown evidence of delivering performances on the international stage however we don’t feel these have been delivered consistently enough.
“As we look forward to the ICC Champions Trophy and ICC Cricket World Cup in 2015 we will look to explore other options.
“The door is not closed to Craig, and he can fight his way back into contention for international selection through consistent high performances with Somerset.”
England last travelled to New Zealand for a Test series in 2008, winning a three match series 2-1.
