Newcastle 0 Man City 2: Edin Dzeko eyes Wembley appearance
Newcastle 0 Man City 2: Edin Dzeko says the Citizens have their sights set firmly on a Wembley appearance after an extra-time win
Edin Dzeko set his sights on a trip to Wembley after Manchester City edged past Newcastle United after extra-time in the League Cup fourth round at St James’ Park.
Manuel Pellegrini’s men looked tired after a demoralising 2-1 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and it took David Silva’s introduction to inspire the Eastlands outfit to victory.
The Citizens finally made the breakthrough when Dzeko’s low cross found Alvaro Negredo and the Spaniard produced a neat finish past Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul in the 99th minute.
And the visitors set up a clash against Leicester City in the last eight when Silva and James Milner combined to tee up Dzeko to secure a 2-0 victory over the Magpies.
“I think there’s still three more games to the final and we want to reach it – that’s definitely our target,” Dzeko told Sky Sports.
He continued: “I think we had a good pre-season and worked hard. We showed that in extra-time. We deserved the win.”
City boss Pellegrini started second-choice goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon for the Capital One Cup tie, and Dzeko praised the shot stopper for his man-of-the-match performance.
“He was great. He’s working hard in training. This is the second League Cup game where he hasn’t conceded. He’s improving,” added Dzeko.
While on his own chance to shine, the Bosnian added: “We get the chance to show the manager that we also deserve to play. Everyone has to show it on the pitch and we did it well today.”
