Sir Alex Ferguson hailed his side’s determination and concentration as Manchester United ran out comfortable winners at Newcastle United on Sunday.

The Red Devils took the lead in the eighth minute when Jonny Evans nodded home Robin van Persie’s corner, before Patrice Evra ghosted into the box and headed in Wayne Rooney’s cross seven minutes later.

Tom Cleverley then made the three points secure in the 71st minute, when his high curling effort beat Steve Harper and dropped into the top corner.

“Today I thought we were really on top of our game in terms of concentration and determination – all the things you want to see in a team that’s going to win,” Ferguson told Sky Sports.

“Concentration’s important at this level. We concentrated on the way we played in the first 20 minutes. It’s strange, we played such good football and made a lot of good openings but we scored from two set-pieces, which is unusual for us.

“All in all I think the football was really good, the concentration was terrific and the determination was there.”

Ferguson also reserved special praise for Rooney as the England striker continues his recovery from the gashed leg he suffered earlier in the season.

“I think he’s getting fitter all the time,” he continued. “He needs the games obviously. With about 20 minutes to go I could see he was tiring a little bit. But he’s put so much work into it, some of his football was terrific today.”

The victory hoists United into second place in the Premier League table, four points behind leaders Chelsea heading into the international break.

And Ferguson admits his side are already under pressure to get results despite the season only being seven games old.

“I think there is pressure,” he said. “You don’t want to fall behind too far. If we hadn’t have won today we’d be seven points behind Chelsea.

“We’re in the frame, we’re still there and every game is important now because you want to stay up there. Hopefully we can do that.”
