Alan Pardew believes Newcastle United’s Europa League exploits contributed to their emphatic loss to Sunderland in the Tyne–Wear derby at St James’ Park.

The visitors stormed into a lead midway through the first half courtesy of Stephane Sessegnon’s clinical finish, before Papiss Cisse had a 61st-minute effort controversially ruled out for offside.

Sunderland, who were without a win in nine Premier League games, doubled their advantage after Adam Johnson’s strike before substitute David Vaughan secured maximum points, moving the Black Cats up to 15th.

The Magpies looked lethargic after a 4-2 aggregate loss to Benfica in the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday, and Pardew admitted the visitors were much sharper than the hosts.

“It’s a tough one to take. I thought Sunderland looked fresh and sharp and almost from the outset we looked a little bit tired from our efforts this week,” he told BBC Sport.

“We were better in the second half but the crucial moment in the game was when our goal was ruled out for offside. We lost Tim Krul and they smash one in the corner.

“This won’t leave me because it’s our home and we don’t want to get beat by our rivals. I will make sure it hurts the players.”
