John O’Shea warned Sunderland that there is still more work to do before their top-flight status is secured after an emphatic victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Black Cats forward Stephane Sessegnon opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a superb low shot past Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul after a lacklustre start by the Magpies.

Adam Johnson’s long-range effort in the 74th minute helped secure three points for the visitors before David Vaughan’s stunning left-footed drive capped off Di Canio’s first victory as Black Cats boss.

Sunderland’s derby win moved the Stadium of Light outfit up to 15th position, two points behind the Magpies and three points clear of 18th-placed Wigan Athletic.

“We will obviously enjoy the result but there’s a lot more hard work to do. You can’t keep depending on other teams. We can’t let this result go to waste,” O’Shea told BBC Sport.

“Our plan worked extremely well, hitting Newcastle on the counter-attack. We were so disappointed with our second-half display against Chelsea last week when we gave two sloppy second half goals away.

“This is for the previous manager as well. The new manager has come in, and a new manager always has a positive effect.

“You can see what type of character he is on the sidelines. This result is a massive step in the right direction, but we’ve got five more massive games to come.”
