Newcastle United

Tim Krul Could not do much to keep out Borini’s fantastic penalty and palmed a deflected shot into Johnson’s path for Sunderland’s second. 6/10

Mathieu Debuchy Not a good afternoon for the Frenchman. Caught out down Sunderland’s left wing a few times. 5

Steven Taylor Did not get close enough to Colback in the lead up to Sunderland’s second goal and had an uncomfortable afternoon up against Altidore. 5

Mike Williamson Contributed to Newcastle’s largely woeful defensive performance in the first-half and his positioning was suspect throughout. 5

Davide Santon Tough afternoon up against the in-form Johnson and could not assert his authority offensively. 5

Cheick Tiote Did not provide adequate cover for the Magpies defence and was not very expressive on the ball either. 5

Vernon Anita Over-run by Sunderland’s industrious midfield and clumsily gave away a penalty. A poor afternoon. 4

Moussa Sissoko Worked hard down Newcastle’s right side but lacked the cutting edge required to break Sunderland down. 6

Hatem Ben Arfa– Played behind Ameobi in the absence of Cabaye but did not create much and was caught in possession in the lead up to Sunderland’s third goal. 5

Sammy Ameobi Began brightly but quickly faded as the first-half went on and hauled off at the break. 5

Shola Ameobi Newcastle’s perennial derby goal-scorer proved ineffective as a result of the Magpies’ poor creativity and perhaps should have buried a header in the second half. 5

Substitutes

Luuk De Jong Brought on at half-time but did not see much of the ball as Sunderland kept Newcastle at bay in the second-half. 5

Paul Dummett A 64th-minute introduction in place of Santon and endured tough time against the magnificent Johnson. 5

Sylvain Marveaux – Came on after 74 minutes but could not influence the game in any way for the Magpies. 5

Sunderland

Vito Mannone Had to deal with a few long-range strikes but a largely comfortable afternoon. 7

Phil Bardsley Defended well and linked up well with Johnson. Brought down by Anita for the penalty. 7

John O’Shea Picked up an early yellow card for bringing down Ameobi but had a solid game after that. 7

Wes Brown Untroubled by Newcastle’s forward line and composed on the ball. 7

Marcus Alonso Very bright down Sunderland’s left wing and delivered a few dangerous balls into Newcastle’s penalty area. 7

Ki Sung-Yueng Brilliantly efficient in the middle of the park. Passed simply and accurately while tackling very well. 7

Liam Bridcutt Solid debut for the midfielder. Linked up well with Ki and Colback. 7

Jack Colback Scored Sunderland’s third after a wonderful counter-attack and made numerous forward runs from his midfield position while carrying out defensive duties very well. 8

Adam Johnson (man of the match) Another outstanding display from the winger. Had a crucial part to play in the lead-up to the penalty before tapping home his sixth goal in four games. May yet find a way into England’s World Cup 2014 squad. 9

Jozy Altidore A handful for Newcastle’s centre-halves all afternoon and produced a stunning flick in the build up to Johnson’s goal. 7

Fabio Borini Worked tirelessly and buried his penalty superbly under pressure before assisting Colback’s 80th minute strike. 8

Substitutes

Sebastian Larsson Had 13 minutes on the pitch and provided a decent outlet on the right-wing in Johnson’s place. 6

Craig Gardner An 89th-minute change for Sunderland and did not have time to do much. 5
