Alan Pardew admitted it was a “tough defeat” for Newcastle United to swallow after his side were stunned by Reading at St James’ Park.

The Magpies were rewarded for a bright start when Yohan Cabaye gave the home side the lead, with his superb free-kick having enough elevation to avoid the wall before dropping into Reading’s net.

However, the Royals pegged back an out-of-form Newcastle in the second half. Adam Le Fondre restored parity after turning Jimmy Kebe’s low cross past Tim Krul.

And Reading’s comeback was complete when Le Fondre finished low past the Magpies goalkeeper to seal the Royals’ first away victory in the Premier League this season.

It means Pardew’s side have only won three games in their last 18 attempts, with the Magpies now just two points clear of 18th-placed Reading.

“That was a tough defeat for us. In the first half we played well and the game should have been out of sight but second half we couldn’t get going and unfortunately we have conceded two bad goals,” Pardew told BBC Sport.

“Perhaps because we have not won for a while, the pressure was on us. We weren’t used to it, we were tentative and it put us on the back foot.

“We should have gone on. We need to strengthen the squad no doubt about it.”
