Brendan Rodgers praised Liverpool for showing the character to twice come from behind to earn a point against 10-man Newcastle.

Yohan Cabaye’s long-range strike put Alan Pardew’s men in front but Gerrard equalised from the penalty spot after Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was sent off for bringing down Luis Suárez in the 40th minute.

Substitute Paul Dummett then put the Mapgies back ahead in the 56th minute before Daniel Sturridge nodded an equaliser shortly after.

The draw moved Liverpool to the top of the Premier League table, a point ahead of Arsenal, who host Norwich City later on Saturday.

“It’s never easy whenever you play against 10 men but I thought some of our play today was outstanding,” Rodgers told BT Sport. “We had to show character, we twice came back from being behind.

“You’ve got to give credit to Newcastle as well. They got the goal at 2-1 and made it very difficult for us. But the combinations in our game were very good, we just thought we could the win.

“But a point at St James’ Park isn’t the worst result you can get.”
